As our nation grapples with the ongoing drought and the aftermath of superstorms we know the time for positive solutions is now. We must take measurable actions together. Learn about the most exciting efforts underway and find out how you can be part of them.

We believe that those who take part in climate change solutions should be appreciated and rewarded. Attendees who take action on climate change solutions during Earth Day Marin will be rewarded with one raffle ticket per action. The Island President California Film Institute: The Island President - Monday, April 15, 2013 from 12:30 PM to 2:00 PM
The Island President lifts the issue of global warming out of the theoretical and into the personal. President Mohamed Nasheed's nation of 1,200 low-lying islands, the Maldives, is sinking into the Indian Ocean as sea levels rise due to global warming. The movie is a little like a non-fiction Mr. Smith Goes to Washington elevated to the world stage. The filmmakers received exclusive access to follow President Nasheed as he prepared over several months for the 2009 Copenhagen Climate Summit. More details...
Greenwood School Greenwood School 7th & 8th Grades Present Sea Party, a children's festival within Earth Day Marin. Sea Party will include super fun games and activities that teach kids and their parents about coastal and watershed creatures (like whales, sharks, otters, salmon, birds and more) and the threats to them. Each of the activities will be a "Mission" for the kids to complete, and they get "Mission Money" to donate to participating organizations The Marine Mammal Center, the River Otter Ecology Project, and the Romberg TIburon Center of Environmental Studies (SFSU) and others.

Marine Mammal Center Marine Mammal Center: Seal Pup Rescue 101 - Sunday, April 14th from 10am to 5pm
Every spring, The Marine Mammal Center rescues many elephant seal and harbor seal pups that have been separated from their mothers due to big storms, people approaching them and scaring the mom away, or young pups unable to find food on their own. To the Rescue will discuss the care that goes into our youngest and most fragile patients.

Matt Jaffe is an up and coming young musician influenced by David Bowie and David Byrne. Matt Jaffe writes original music that has won "Best Original Song" awards at recent West Coast Songwriter competitions. He performs regularly in venues such as the Great American Music Hall in San Francisco, the Bitter End in New York City and the Coffee Gallery Backstage in Los Angeles and has opened for artists such as Tommy Castro and Graham Parker & the Rumor. Ex-Talking Heads guitarist/keyboardist Jerry Harrison will produce Jaffe's debut album.

Garth Lenz FROM CANADA: GARTH LENZ (TEDx, 1st Prize Winner - Int'l Photography Competition, TIME Magazine, NYT - Garth Lenz's touring exhibition, "The True Cost of Oil", has touched people around the world with it's stunning and evocative portraits of impacted places. His images of Alberta Canada's Tar Sands and boreal region were awarded first place in Social Documentary Net's "Searching for a 21st Century Landscape" contest and he has been recognized with many other awards.

Spirit Rock Earth Day 2013 Saturday, April 20 from 9:30am - 4:30pm
Spirit Rock's Earth Day celebration is a day of meditation, learning, ritual and moving compassion into action. Teachers include Wes "Scoop" Nisker, Paul Hawken and others. Performers include Eve Decker, Teja Bell and others. More details...
The Do The Math documentary from is a 42-minute film about the rising movement to change the terrifying math of the climate crisis and challenge the fossil fuel industry. Features Bill McKibben, Naomi Klein and Bishop Desmond Tutu. Earth Day Marin is joining in with the nationally-coordinated premiere of the film which will viewed in communities all over the US.

Earth Day Marin Earth Day Marin Festival - Sunday, April 21st (see right column) Tamra Peters Tamra Peters conceived and lead the development of Resilient Neighborhoods, a program that helps households do two things: go on a low-carbon diet to lose 5,000 pounds in sixty days, and build a more resilient community that can better withstand the potential disruptions of climate change. Last year over 100 Marin households surpassed expectations by reducing 1.3 million pounds of carbon.

Celebrate springtime on the farm with live music, local organic cuisine, and hands-on farm and craft activities for all ages. Learn where your food comes from by milking goats, feeding chickens, touring the organic garden, or making bread, butter and cheese.
Jack Broadbent Jack Broadbent, Executive Officer/Air Pollution Control Officer, for the Bay Area Air Quality Management District (Air District), will speak about black carbon and what we can do about it.
San Geronimo Valley Community Center: UNSTUFF YOUR LIFE with bestselling author Andrew Mellen -- Saturday, April 27th from 10 to 11:30am Adam Scow Adam Scow is the California Campaigns Director at Food & Water Watch where he is responsible for developing strategy for local, state, and national campaigns. Adam has guided several successful campaigns across California to protect water as a public resource and prevent privatization of local water supply.
He will speak about fracking in the Bay Area at Earth Day Marin.
  Alicia M. Retes Come enjoy a story, a Coast Miwok song and native instruments to play with Alicia M. Retes, C.I.T., C.I.G., Certified Interpretive Guide and Trainer from Museum of the American Indian and Camp Coyote! Alicia, part Mayo, Yaqui and Cherokee is a multitalented interpretive artisan, nature guide and musician.
  Spark and Whisper Spark and Whisper featuring Anita Sandwina (vocals, guitar, mandolin) and Velvy Appleton (vocals, acoustic/electric/slide guitars)– called "a serious force in modern folk" by Paul Liberatore of the Marin Independent Journal. In addition to their performance, Velvy Appelton will lead carbon free music and singing at 11:30am.
  David Escobar Salvadoran born of the indigenous group called the Lenca-Poton, David Escobar is a well-respected community advocate and an aide to Marin Supervisor Steve Kinsey. He is a leader in the green Latino and Native movements including local efforts with the Green Promotoras and cofounding Viviendo Verde. He is currently a member of the Indigenous Salvadorian Collaborative, the Binational Indigenous Salvadorian Council and teaches Indigenous studies at Dominican University.
  Dore Coller Bring an acoustic instrument and join in a live carbon-free jam led by multitalented guitarist Dore Coller (CRB, Savannah Blu Rowan Bros, Jerry Garcia, Youngbloods, YardDogs) & friends.
  Peter G. Joseph Dr. Peter G. Joseph, MD co-founded the San Francisco Bay Area chapter of Physicians for Social Responsibility in 1979. Dr. Joseph has been trained by former Vice President Al Gore to be a Climate Reality Project speaker. He currently is northern California district manager for The Climate Reality Project and a group leader for the Marin chapter of Citizens' Climate Lobby.
  Peter Barnes Climate change solutions thought-leader and sustainable business innovator Peter Barnes is the cofounder of Working Assets/ Credo Mobile and the Mesa Refuge, a retreat for writers working on environmental and social issues in Point Reyes. He is author of Climate Solutions: A Citizen's Guide, Who Owns the Sky? and Capitalism 3.0: A Guide to Reclaiming the Commons. You can learn more about him on Wikipedia.
  Peter Asmus Peter Asmus is an expert on renewable energy and microgrids, host of Eyes Wide Open on KWMR and a member Space Debris (as heard on David Gans' syndicated radio show and at Whole Earth Festival). He will speak and MC at Earth Day Marin as well as performing his music.
  Damon Connolly Ericka Omena Erickson, MPA is a Marin County Planning Commisioner and Associate Director of Marin Grassroots. She is a current member of the Marin Women's Political Caucus and of the Board of Directors at Brazilian Alliance. Ericka received 2013 Martin Luther King Jr. Humanitarian Award presented by the Marin County Human Rights Commission among others.
She will speak on land use and sustainability and the Plan Bay Area Public Hearing on 4/29. More...
  Damon Connolly San Rafael City Councillor Damon Connolly

First elected to the San Rafael City Council in 2007, and re-elected in 2011, Damon Connolly has worked hard to reduce San Rafael's contribution to global warming. In addition, Damon chairs the Marin Energy Authority, which enables all Marin County and Richmond electric customers to purchase electricity with significantly more renewable content and at affordable prices. Damon served as a leader on the Green Ribbon Committee that developed San Rafael's Climate Change Action Plan, the first to be adopted by a Marin city.

   Kate Sears To address climate change and resulting sea level rise, Supervisor Kate Sears is initiating a pilot study in Southern Marin to examine what our Bayside communities can do to both mitigate and adapt to anticipated impacts of climate change by identifying community assets and priorities and developing local solutions. She also represents Marin on the Sonoma Marin Area Rail Transit (SMART), the Bay Conservation and Development Commission (BCDC), the Transportation District, Richardson's Bay Regional Authority (RBRA), the Transportation Authority of Marin (TAM), Marin Transit, and Marin Energy Authority (MEA). Craft a Haiku to share your inspirations about an Earth Day or the natural world - or to bring out an issue near and dear to your heart. Those who pen haiku dedicated to climate change might win a chance to read their haiku on the Earth Day Marin Festival stage.

Please send just one haiku, sticking to the traditional 5-7-5 Japanese form, along with your name and town in Marin — by 5 p.m. April 5 to Please put "Earth Day Haiku" in the subject line. They will be run in the April 16 Marin IJ Plus section and online.
  James 'Bikes Green' Sievert Car free since 2002, blogger, certified cycling instructor and CAT 1 mountain bike racer James "Bikes Green" Sievert is a passionate advocate for bicyclists reaching thousands of students every year with the "why and how" of biking through the award winning Marin County Safe Routes to Schools program.   Mwanza Furaha Mwanza Furaha has shared the stage with artists including Betty Carter, Lou Rawls, Merle Saunders, Carmen McRae and many more. She will be joined by Sandy White to sing the classic Negro Spiritual Wade in the Water.

Emmissions from transportation are one of the largest sources of greenhouse gas pollution in Marin. Plus biking helps you keep fit and feel great. Ride your bike to join us!

Join Mountain Bike Hall of Famer Jacquie Phelan, Zero Waste & Community Advocate Renee Goddard and Bicycle Works co-founder Jelani Bertoni for the ride of your life! Meet at Bicycle Works at 9:30am, for a 10am sharp departure for Redwood High School. Celebratory attire requested! If you haven't been on one of these rides before, you haven't lived!

Mountain Bike Hall of Famer Jacquie Phelan's cycling roots go back to the Pleistocene Era (before podiums, before mountain bikes, before you were born). She created mountain biking's first skills camps in the Jurassic Era (early 80's) specifically to encourage women and girls to try dirt cycling for car-( and care)-free fun.

Secure valet bicycle parking will be provided by Marin County Bicycle Coalition.
